The Sleeping Beauty

The years 2018 to 2019 were Tim Brown's last as Artistic Director, before he handed over the reins to Clare Morehen, who had taken over from Liz Whelan as Rehearsal Director at the beginning of 2018. Tim's final production, which was a re-mount of BTQ's The Sleeping Beauty (2015) was both a financial and critical success for the company, and was the eighth BTQ production under Tim's artistic direction. His contribution to the company over these years was considerable, and he left it in a very secure position, artistically.

"The Sleeping Beauty is the perfect ballet to highlight what has been a truly wonderful experience for me with Ballet Theatre of Queensland. Over the last 7 years I have had the pleasure of bringing to life many beautiful ballets for the company and this is a favourite.

We have reworked my 2015 production of The Sleeping Beauty artistically and technically with new staging and re-imagined costuming. Bill Haycock’s set design is beautiful, while Carmel Wenck has pushed costumes to the next level.

Along with much of the very demanding traditional choreography of Marius Petipa, we have also, this year, included the Act 1 Aurora solo. I must therefore especially thank our wonderful new Rehearsal Director Claire Morehen, who has brought her tremendous expertise and professional experience to the production.

A special thank you to Executive Director Denise Richardson for her passion and dedication, as well as to the Parent Committee, and the parents and friends of BTQ who have also contributed so much of their time and talent to the production.

I hope you enjoy The Sleeping Beauty, and the charming characters our BTQ dancers have worked so hard to bring to life.  My congratulations go to all the dancers and the principal dancers within the company that courageously tackled some of the most challenging roles in the world of ballet. I have no doubt you will be truly captivated by their performance this season."
